ALTERNATOR WELDER OR 120 VDC GENERATOR
***correction added.*** Light and portable alternator welder with 120 VDC 20 amp receptacle for all power tool with universal motors. Weld, grind, cut, sand, polish and drill in remote locations. Why waste energy running an alternator welder with a 200 hp vehicle engine at excessively high rpms when you can use a 5 to 20 hp mower engine. Just roll this puppy onto the truck bed and get cracking. Build it yourself in the shop with all used parts. It is cheap, rugid, reliable and fairly light. NOTE!!! PLEASE BE SAFE AND DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU ARE NOT SURE HOW TO PROCEED FROM ALL OF THE DETAILS GIVEN IN THIS ARTICLE. Start with a 3G alternator. Remove the regulator. Substitute higher capacity diodes if you like. Use a 3 ohm 50 watt rheostat to controll field current. Engine rpm will control output voltage. Geared at 2.5:1 ratio results in 9000 rpm with a max engine rpm of 3600. 9000 rpms is required to max out an alternator to reach the 120 vdc mark. You will need a motorcycle battery to provide field current for the alternator. Choose an engine which has at least a small 6 amp battery charging coil. This will give you charging voltage of 14.7 vdc for charging the battery and 14.7 for the field. **Note** The rheostat needs to be at its 3 ohm or minimum field current position to charge the battery or start the engine after the engine is started and up to speed, then max output to the field current. After welding return the rheostat to minimum field current to charge the ...
