Does A Homemade Battery Desulfator Work for Reconditioning Batteries?

ItemTitle

Battery desulfators are used to recondition batteries, and you may consider making one yourself instead of actually buying a desulfator. But, before you can determine if homemade battery desulfator works for reconditioning batteries, it's good to know what a desulfator is and how it works first.

Does A Homemade Battery Desulfator Work for Reconditioning Batteries?

A desulfator is a circuit which is used to restore weak sulfated battery to life. After exposing the weak sulfated battery to the circuit, the batteries will become like new. Sulfation happens when a certain chemical reaction occurs during discharge. The lead and the lead dioxide formation during discharge changes into lead sulfate. The lead sulfate layer then accumulates over time since it does not dissolve in the battery's water. Thus, the layer creates an insulation between the tiles and electrolyte - lowering the charge that your battery creates. Lead sulfate also forms when the battery is forced to rest for several months. When a 12 volt lead-acid battery stays stagnant with a voltage below 12.3 volts, sulfur crystals will likely begin to form on the lead plates. The crystal formation increases the internal resistance which may make it useless.

How Does A Homemade Battery Desulfator work?

Battery desulfators send high frequency pulses through the battery and create a sound that will break up the crystals or lead sulfate formation. How long it will take to break the crystals will depend on the kind of battery is being desulfated. However, certain precautions should be considered when desulfating batteries. They have the capacity to burst into flames or can spit and spray its electrolytes around, so proper safety measures should be taken. Maintenance is somewhat dangerous due to the sulfuric acid content (where the sulfuric crystals come from) is highly corrosive. When desulfating, make sure you are in an open area. Make sure that you Wear protective clothing, eye goggles and if possible, splash shields.

It is important to know that desulfation will not bring batteries with shorted cells and worn out plates back to its normal condition. However, a desulfator is a useful tool to people who depend on battery storage for power.

Frequency pulse conditioning is used in desulfating to make sure that only the sulfate crystals are affected and that the battery does not overheat. The desulfation may take days or weeks during which time the battery must be charged in parallel with the desulfator. The battery will end up reconditioned and fully charged after the desulfation.

You may use Altoids cans for building your homemade battery desulfator for easy handling. To do this, affix a piece of perf-board into the bottom of the Altoids can. Set a strip of adhesive copper foil onto the bottom edge of the board to act as ground bus. You need two switches, two resistors, two pots, one field-effect transistor, and one light-emitting diode onto the perf-board. Affix insulation between the metal can and the circuitry of the desulfator. You also need to drill holes into the can for the wires and ventilation. A solder connects the wires into the electrolytic capacitors. Use output leads and clips to connect the battery desulfator to the battery. Now, that you are able to make your own battery sulfator, you will no longer have difficulty to restore to life your dead batteries. This way you are able to save hundreds with only few dollars. There are guides or videos that can help you with the step by step creation of a homemade battery desulfator, and when you have it ready, you can now start reconditioning batteries.

Are you afraid of drilling through ceramic wall tile in case you crack or scratch the tile? I know that I was the first time that I did it. The thought of having to replace a perfectly good tile because I had destroyed it with my drill was just a little daunting. Don't worry though, it isn't nearly as difficult as it looks and if you follow a few simple rules your ceramic tile drilling should turn out just fine.

Drilling Ceramic Tiles: How To Drill Holes In Ceramic Tile

Use the correct type of drill bit

Drilling Ceramic Tiles: How To Drill Holes In Ceramic Tile

You need to use a carbide tipped drill bit for drilling into ceramics. The more common twist-drill bits that you might use for drilling into metal are not suitable because they will not be able to cut through the hard ceramic glaze on the tile. You may find that your DIY store has drill bits specialy marked for the purpose of drilling through ceramic tile.

Prevent the drill bit from slipping or skating on the ceramic surface

Take 2 pieces of masking tape and stick them on the ceramic tile in an 'X' pattern so that the hole will be in the center of the cross. This will help to stop the drill bit from slipping off target when drilling. Use a variable speed drill and start very slowly until the surface glaze has been penetrated to give the drill bit a guide. I like to drill very slowly all the way through to be on the safe side.

Change the drill bit when you are through the ceramic tile

When you feel the drill bit reaching the back of the tile be careful to slow down the drilling to ensure a clean exit at the back of the tile. When you are all the way through change the drill bit for one more suitable to drilling through the material that the ceramic tile is mounted on. You most likely will need either a wood drill or a masonry drill bit at this point.

Drilling a pilot hole

Unless I'm drilling a large hole in ceramic tile I never drill a pilot hole first but I do know that some people advise that you do. I prefer to be very careful and start drilling very slowly to make sure that I'm on target and the bit doesn't slip. I don't have to buy 2 ceramic tile drill bits that way.

Choosing a drill

When drilling ceramic tiles make sure that you use a power drill that has a variable speed control, which can be set to rotate very slowly. Portable battery operated power drills can be very good for this purpose.

Solar Garden Lights - How to Change Batteries

Before you start taking apart your solar garden light unit, you should consult the instructions or manual that came with it. Although the inner workings of these solar lights are essentially the same, the construction is usually different given the make and model. The instructions will also indicate the type of rechargeable battery provided with the unit, making it easier to locate the proper type of replacement battery. Under no circumstances should you replace the battery with a regular alkaline household battery. Alkaline batteries will damage the inner workings of the solar power cell and render the unit useless. Only use rechargeable batteries as replacements for your solar garden lights.

How do I change the batteries in my solar garden light?

Find a working area with good lighting and a place to set the pieces in order to reassemble it properly. As far as tools go, most units will require a couple of sizes of Phillips screwdrivers to take the unit apart and to put it together again. There are usually small screws, so have a small tray to hold these so you don't lose any while working on the solar garden light unit. Place the pieces in order when taking them apart. This will make it easier to put it together as you would just reassemble the unit in reverse order from taking it apart.

Once you have reached the battery, remove it from the solar light. You can try to recharge it in a household charger designed for that type of battery. Sometimes batteries do not charge all the way, especially if the solar garden light is placed in an area that does not receive full sun. This can shorten the lifespan of the battery. If the battery cannot be recharged, you should replace it. If the battery does recharge, replace it in the solar power cell and reassemble the solar garden light.

Where Can I Find Replacement Batteries for My Solar Garden Light?

As rechargeable batteries are becoming more popular, it is quite easy to find replacements. You will find them at most electronic stores in the section that sells batteries. There are a few kinds of rechargeable batteries. Any kind is acceptable, but you may want to replace them with the same kind you removed from your solar light. Look for a battery that will hold its charge for a long time. Life expectancy for most rechargeable batteries are 1-2 years. Replacing the rechargeable batteries in your solar garden light each year is recommended to get the most value out of your purchase.
